MSTSBin is an unofficial patch developed by an immensely clever programmer called "George".
There is an "official" MSTSBin web page hosted on the UKTS website but as English is not the authors first language we feel that it may put some people off understanding what a great bit of software this actually is.
The MT MSTSBin page is intended purely to explain to users what MSTSBin is, what it isn't, what it does and how to get hold of it.
There is no intention to try and claim any connection with the official page or the application, we are just trying to support the project and push it out to a wider audience and make it simple to download. MT are very thankful to the author of the patch for making it all possible.
MSTSBin is a binary modification of MSTS's train.exe code. This code is what runs the game and dictates how it works.
This is an unofficial 'patch', but one that MS have taken no action to remove from distribution in the 3 or so years its been released. This to us at least suggests that they have no objection. As MS offer no support to MSTS anyway, so the use of this patch cannot effect any official support you may obtain (because there simply is none)
MSTSBin has breathed new life into an aging PC Game, and added significant new functions which while slightly not as slick as a modern sim (Rail Works for instance), do offer much of the new functionality people were looking for.
Some of the features it adds are listed below.
- Day and night cabs - Cabs can go dark in tunnels or at night.
- Ability to swap cabs - You can now drive from the other end of a multicab loco or Multiple unit.
- Removal of limit on number of lights - No more "dark" signals.
- Improved memory management - Much more detailed routes and activities can be run.Frame rates improve, more complex acts are possible.
- Fixed front coupler bug - No more crashes when coupling to the front of a loco.
- Multiple Passenger views - You can choose any coach with a passenger view instead of the MSTS limit of just the coach nearest the loco.
- Opening doors - Coaches with opening doors are possible.(Requires model to be built with this functionality)
- Wheels/bogies on reversed stock turn the correct way.
There are more, but we will leave our list with here with what we consider the most important functions/fixes to be.
Our newer routes, (Great Eastern onwards) run far better on an MSTSBin equipped installation of MSTS simply because of its improved memory management. Based purely on this we fully recommend our customers install and use MSTSBin.
MT Support of MSTSBin
Making Tracks fully recommend the use of MSTSBin and fully support users who use it.
We will also attempt to make use of some of the additional features it adds.
In general we will try and ensure that our products will support night cabs, MSTSBin lighting, Cab swapping, although it is not guaranteed to be in all products.
In the early days of MSTSBin things changed often and it was not practical for someone like us to keep up with all the changes, hence routes like GE had limited support for MSTSBin.
We try to support what we feel are the most important MSTSBin features as we have time to include however, due to the amount of stock we have previously built, it is impractical for us to go back and upgrade all our older stock.Much of our stock will have been originally built before some features were possible.
Installation
To install MSTSBin you also need to have installed the most recent official version of MSTS, which is available here in an easy to use installer.
